Family fun day on the reef

Set for a whole day sailing, and exploring the reef we witnessed 4 seasons in one day. A perfect start, speedy journey to little black reef with my son learning some great facts from John and Sean. Wonderful snorkel session 1 saw numerous fish and a couple of reef sharks before snorkel 2 where the heavy dark clouds rolled in. The staff (in rubber ducky boats) were extremely experienced in assisting us from rapidly changing conditions (now choppy) and we left the reef in heavy rain which was a welcome sight. We returned with the sun threatening to break through passing a few slower sail boats on the way. I have already suggested to several of my friends that Explore is definately the boat to choose if travelling to the Whitsundays. Five Star !!

Amazing Crew!!

Amazing group, especially because the crew is 100% invested in the tours... I started off quite disappointed because we couldn’t head off to the Great Barrier Reef due to weather conditions but they took us snorkelling to some amazing spots where the coral was just sooo colorful and diverse (I hear was better than Great Barrier!). The crew was so friendly and helpful and were just so passionate, I was really happy to stay on! 100% recommend and when I come back one day to go and see the Great Barrier, I will go with them!!! Well done team!!!

Not worth the money

Good day, Unfortunately my experience with both the boat excursion and book.me as vendor was dusappointing. In book.me’s online product description it is mentioned that ’No trip to the Whitsundays should go without experiencing the Great Barrier Reef.’ This is a misleading sentence and I was under the impression that the boat tour would include stops at both the Great Barrier Reef (and what I now have been told is called ’Whitehaven Beach’) as Whitsundays is a collective name for 74 Islands and aquatic area. However, the beach is associated with Whitsundays and what’s first comes up on a Google search. Furthermore, this type of local knowledge is hard for a tourist to know beforehand and should not be expected. When I realised that the boat tour did not stop at the beach I informed the boat crew that it felt as ’a cheap marketing trick’ as the beach was the primary purpose of the excursion and that we had limited time. We weren’t offered any goodwill, new/discounted tour or refund which I feel is poor customer service. It is not mentioned anywhere that the boat tour pick up other customers in Hamilton Island, which according to the boat crew is part of the regular schedule, and takes away time from snorkeling and being in the water. In addition, the black reef (uncertain of the name) did not deliver in neither colorful reef or marine life. The quality of the trip in general is not worth the money, did not meet my standars (as the great barrier Reef is promoted as a touristic highlight) and ansad to say I would not recommend this excursion to anyone — rather the opposite. The staff was informative and felt like they didn’t knew what they were doing. I feel tricked and that we were given a bad deal. I hope you consider this feedback as constructive and a learning possibility. Regards, Cassandra Elonen

Good experience albeit some key disappointments

The Great Barrier Reef. The world's largest reef system and one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. Home to 10% of the world's fish species. You think it would have just a bit more respect... After having spent countless hours looking for a reef tour agency that would offer more than an hour of reef time for a price still somewhat affordable for a college student, my friend and I (both of us nature enthusiasts studying wildlife conservation) decided Explore offered the best bang for what we wanted out of our buck (maximum time observing the reef). Upon arriving to the Airlie Beach marina, we were greeted by our enthusiastic skipper who informed us it would be a bit windy and was looking like we couldn't make it out to the inner reef today. We were offered a full refund or a spot on the boat to proceed with their "windy day tour". Still promised with reef experiences (via the outer reef that surrounds small offshore islands) and determined to see this wonder with the only day we had, we went on with it. The reason I feel the need to discuss some key disappointments about my experience is perhaps because of my conservation mindset but are worth noting in my opinion. While in the water, I witnessed a guest treading water kick and break off a 6 inch piece of Staghorn coral with his flipper. I immediately let him know of what he was unintentionally doing. Although this was a sheer accident, I can't help but wonder how this could have been avoided. I believe a shifted emphasis could have easily prevented the situation. We were lightly reminded of watching where we kicked with our flippers in the intro briefing, but much more emphasis was put on how to properly operate the flippers, rather than being mindful and respectful of the sensitive environment we are in. Although I can only speak to my specific experience with Explore, my second disappointment is more oriented to the entire GBR region and accompanying tour agencies. With recent promotions of reef-safe sunscreen in the states, although subtle, I figured would surely be promoted by the GBR region and the tour agencies. I thought wrong. I couldn't even find it the local grocery stores. When we swim with regular sunscreen on, chemicals like oxybenzone can seep into the water, where they're absorbed by corals. These substances contain nanoparticles that can disrupt coral's reproduction and growth cycles, ultimately leading to bleaching. Sunscreens made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral-based, and their ingredients are less harmful to corals and not linked to coral bleaching. But the only zinc sunscreen users in sight were myself, my friend, and one of the guides (you can tell because of the white residue it leaves behind). I suppose at this point, my review is only going to be read by those who truly care about this environment, so thank you for reading. I hope this helps someone.
