Just 45 minutes from Cairns, Fitzroy Island feels like another world. A lush rainforest rises from coral-fringed shores, where clear water, marine life and wide open space set the tone for an island day that is equal parts adventure and calm. This is one of the nearest islands on the Great Barrier Reef to Cairns, yet it remains refreshingly uncrowded and naturally beautiful.

Unlike many tropical islands, some of Fitzroy’s beaches are formed from ancient coral rather than sand. Over thousands of years, fragments of reef were shaped and relocated by powerful tropical systems, creating uniquely textured shorelines that speak to the island’s deep connection to the reef itself. Snorkel straight from the beach to discover colourful fish and coral gardens, or stretch out on world-famous Nudey Beach, consistently ranked among Australia’s best.

Above the waterline, rainforest walking tracks wind through a national park landscape rich in history and life. Fitzroy Island is known to the Gunggandji people as a place of cultural significance, where sea and land are deeply connected. Visitors are invited to explore with respect, curiosity and care.
