Explore the sheer beauty of the various landscapes in Litchfield National Park. From waterfalls, crystal clear pools, jumping crocodiles, to tropical rainforests, this tour has it all!

Highlights

  • Uncover hidden waterfalls
  • Explore the famous cascading plunge pools of Florence Falls
  • Enjoy a swim in shallow pristine pools of Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls
  • Get up close to Northern Territories apex predator, the crocodile (optional extra)
  • Enjoy a stroll along the wetlands boardwalk, look out for birds!
  • Set eyes on the century-old Magnetic Termite Mounds

Venture out to one of our personal favourite places on earth - Litchfield National Park. Litchfield National Park is an ancient landscape shaped by water making it an absolute MUST see when in Top End. It’s home to beautiful waterfalls, iconic magnetic termite mounds, sandstone pillars, beautiful pockets of tropical rainforest, and more.

We’ll begin our tour departing Darwin making our way towards the world-class Litchfield National Park. Along the way, you will have an opportunity to stop and experience the iconic Jumping Crocodile Cruise (optional extra) on the Adelaide River or join us as we visit the Fogg Dam Conservation Centre. This traditional land of the Limilngan-Wulna people (who are active in the reserve's management) is home to a variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for numerous species of birds, turtles, water pythons and of course the iconic Saltwater Crocodile. Boardwalks will take you through different landscapes, stunning views, and a large number of resident wading birds. Highly recommended to bring a camera and capture the beautiful sky during sunrise or sunset.

Next, we’ll visit the iconic monolithic Magnetic Termite Mounds, an amazing sight! We’ll then escape the heat and cool off off in one of Litchfield’s stunning natural plunge pools like Buley Rockholes or Wangi Falls. For our last stop, we’ll visit a thundering waterfall like Florence Falls or Tolmer Falls and be amazed at the sheer beauty carved out amongst the rocky escarpment. A beautiful sight to remember and to end our tour on. We’ll be reflecting on our beautiful day out in the Litchfield National Park on our drive back to Darwin.

A Great Outback Experience

We only had limited time in NT - so it was important to see as much as we could. Animals, Birds and enjoying nature is our thing- and the day trip was brilliant in all those categories! It was a huge full day, I haven’t got the space to list all the wild life we saw (and YES we did see a good size croc reasonably close up). Two amazing swims, the first in a running river, second at the base of a beautiful waterfall were just the best fun ever. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable - without being over bearing or annoying. Yep, this experience was definitely worth what we paid and was excellent value. Loved every part of it!

Litchfield National Park & Fogg Dam Autopia Tours

Our guide Andrew met us on time and there were 14 passengers on the coaster bus. We travelled on the Stuart Highway out of Darwin over the Elizabeth River. First stop was at Adelaide River to drop off half the passengers who were going on a crocodile jumping cruise. The rest of us continued onto Fogg Dam wetlands. It had originally been set to be rice paddy's. After some failed attempts with machinery and magpie geese eating all of the rice the project was abandoned. Now it is a haven for birdlife, native rats both fresh water and salt water crocs of which we saw a few. A couple of salties even were laying on the road sunning themselves. We saw a jabiru, and some non-native wild pigs and buffalo grazing near the wetland water, a potential meal for a croc. A quick stop at Batchelor to grab some lunch and drinks for the journey. It is pretty much an Aboriginal community now. Andrew took us to see the magnetic termite mounds which look like a never ending graveyard set in marshland. It's quite amazing how they all have both and are narrow unlike the other species. Off to the Buley Rock Pools for an hour an easy walk and a refreshing swim. Several rock pools cascading down. It was like having a natural spa. A few kilometres down the road we went to Florence Falls. It's about 350 steps down but so worth it. Alternatively you can take a 1.1km wander down. The falls did not disappoint. Just stunning. It is from the same water source as Buley Rock Pools. Incredible that in the current dry season the water all comes from sandstone which acts like a sponge. Through the wet season it soaks up all of the water. In dry season it releases it into these incredible waterfalls. There was a water monitor hanging out which was cool. This place was definitely a highlight of our trip. From there 30km drive to Wangi Falls. They caught a couple of salt water crocs 4.5 and 4.9 metres earlier this year so it is fenced off one to keep any crocs still in there in and two keep the tourists out from swimming in the water. It is a beautiful photo opportunity all the same and it had a rainbow through the waterfall. Also a quick opportunity to grab a refreshment at the cafe. Abouta 45 minute drive to the Litchfield National Park sign for a quick photo opportunity. There is also an enormous termite mound which is about 5 metres high. Last stop was Berry Springs pub for a quick drink before heading back to Darwin via Palmerston.. There were many small controlled fires along the roadside which helps the bush regenerate and provides fresh, juicy grass for the agile wallabies etc. Andrew our guide was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna . He enriched us with information about the land, it's history and how the different elements including the termites play an important part to these ecosystems. They feed many birds, echidnas, goannas etc. Andrew was a great guide and very accommodating. Do yourself a favour and book a trip with Autopia Tours.

Awesome day trip with an excellent guide!!

A huge thanks to Daryl for sharing so freely his knowledge and love of the area. The trip was very well organised, and Daryl made sure everyone was looked after and made the whole experience super relaxed. He still managed to fit in so much for the day. I felt so lucky to swim in the pure rock pools below Florence falls!
