Your day trip starts in Cairns at 6:30am at the Cairns Central station. The journey up the Barron Gorge is one of the great rail experiences of the world as you wind your way from the coast, up the scenic Kuranda Range (the Kuranda scenic railway) to Kuranda including stops at Barron Falls and Stoney Creek (conditions permitting) in the World Heritage listed rainforests.
Being in the same compartment as the railmotor driver, you are able to discuss the area's historic points of interest and natural beauty with our fantastic staff in a very personal and unique setting.
After a stop off at Barron Falls, enjoy your day in Kuranda with multiple options for return at various times throughout the day.
THE RETURN JOURNEY:
The Savannahlander provides a one-way trip to Kuranda as the railmotors will continue on and not return for 4 days. Kuranda however is well- serviced and you have multiple options for the return journey:
THINGS TO DO IN KURANDA:
From the Butterfly Sanctuary to the excellent coffee shops and restaurants, Kuranda is a perfect destination for the day that has something to offer everyone. While the bulk of the attractions and Heritage Markets do not open until 9-10am, you will have plenty of time to get a coffee or a bite to eat and take in one of the many scenic walks around the area.
After working up a thirst while enjoying the natural beauty of the area, why not drop in to one of the excellent cafe's or the local pub for cold beer and a bit of local culture.
LOCAL WALKS:
Jum Rum Creek - Jungle Walk - River Walk
From the Visitor Information Centre three linked paths form an easy circuit walk through the rainforest in Kuranda Village. The Jum Rum Creek walk follows a short paved path past the fire station on Coondoo Street to the Jum Rum Creek Conservation Park where it winds through rainforest, crosses Jum Rum Creek, and then climbs to Barron Falls Road. At this point it connects to the Jungle Walk, which continues through rainforest to the River Walk beside the Barron River. The River Walk follows the riverbank to the railway station where a staircase links the walk to Coondoo Street, 500 metres from the Visitor Information Centre.
Rainforest Canopy Walk & Barron Falls Lookout
This spectacular boardwalk connects Barron Falls Road with Barron Falls Lookout via the Barron Falls Railway Station. Suspended high above the forest floor, the boardwalk weaves through the lush rainforest canopy before descending to the Falls Lookout. There are so many vantage points along the platform that a return walk can take longer to complete than the distance suggests.

Was a fun trip up to Kuranda and a very different experience. More like a local's version with most of the passengers being Australian travelling further out west. Very uncrowded, relaxed and they even stopped at Stoney Creek bridge for us to get out and take in the view and waterfall. Some nice views out over the ranges and Barron Gorge. About a two hour ride up.
Took my family on this trip, they all loved it. Thank you to the wonderful train drivers, we had a great time.
Excellent scenic rail journey for 90 minutes from Cairns to Kuranda. We also enjoyed the 3pm walk from the station to the rainforest and on to town where we had the next few hours walking around boutique shops and eateries. Lovely visit then return by bus to Cairns, another scenic route though not as good as the train. The driver was informative and knowledgeable able the history of the route and we took turns sitting in the cabs asking questions. All round a lovely day outing. Warren and Liz
My friends and I were travelling on the Savannahlander from Cairns to Kuranda. We had to wake up real early for the trip, however the cheerful disposition of the drivers was enough to bring up our spirits. The ride was comfortable and the train clean, which made the whole trip very pleasant. Definitely recommended :)

Brilliant trip
Took the Savannahlander from Cairns to Kuranda. It departs a little early but well worth it for a much smaller train with lots of history and some 'family's drivers (for those who have seen Railroad Australia). You might even get some extra stops along the way.
